Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day

A Special Event for Delaware’s Female Athletes

The Office of Women’s Advancement & Advocacy hosted a special celebration for National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the University of Delaware. This event honored the incredible progress of girls and women in sports and highlighted the benefits that athletic participation brings to their lives.

Female athletes from every high school across the state were invited to join in this inspiring day. The event featured a panel discussion with collegiate athletes, coaches, and leaders in women’s sports, who shared their expertise on the topic, “Taking the Next Step as a Student Athlete.” After the panel, attendees enjoy light refreshments and receive two complimentary tickets to the UD Women’s Basketball game, which follows the celebration.

High schools were asked to nominate one outstanding female athlete to represent their school and OHS selected senior Gabriella Pudimott (Softball and Track & Field) to represent the Ducks. We celebrate Gabby as one of Delaware’s most talented female athletes and her contribution to the future of women in sports!

National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Celebrating OHS Athletes: Sophia Ridgeway and Hannah O'Grady Recognized at Legislative Hall for National Girls & Women in Sports Day

On January 29, 2025, two outstanding OHS student-athletes, Sophia Ridgeway and Hannah O'Grady, were honored at Delaware’s Legislative Hall in Dover for their dedication to sports and their exemplary leadership. The event celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day, a nationwide initiative highlighting the achievements of female athletes and promoting gender equality in sports.

Sophia  and Hannah were recognized for their athletic accomplishments and contributions to the sports community as field hockey and lacrosse standouts at Odessa. After the Delaware House passed a resolution in honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, the young athletes were invited to the assembly to receive individual recognition in front of lawmakers.

The day began with a meet-and-greet where Sophia and Hannah had the chance to engage with legislators and share their inspiring stories. It’s an incredible honor to be recognized alongside so many incredible women in sports. This event is such a wonderful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much more we can achieve.Being able to stand in front of these leaders and show what women in sports can accomplish is an amazing experience. We hope their story encourages other girls to pursue their passions, no matter what they are.

State Representative Melanie Ross Levin praised the achievements of female athletes like Ridgeway and O'Grady, emphasizing how sports provide young women with essential life skills, confidence, and a sense of community. Sophia and Hannah represent the future of women’s sports in Delaware. We are so proud to have athletes like them leading the way and showing the next generation what is possible and it serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting girls and women in sports. As we celebrate their achievements, we also look forward to the continued growth and success of women athletes, both locally and nationally.

Sophia and Hannah’s recognition is a testament to the hard work, determination, and talent that continues to shape the future of women’s sports in Delaware. Congratulations to both of them for being shining examples of leadership, dedication, and athletic excellence!

Alumni Spotlight

Girls Basketball attended the PSU York vs. PSU Brandywine women’s basketball game this Tuesday to support Odessa Grad and Ducks 1000-point scorer Delaney Burroughs who now suits up for the York Nittany Lions. The business major lead her team with 16 points and 32 min in an exciting back-and-forth game where they fell to Brandywine on a last second buzzer beating 3-point attempt by Burroughs which rattled out of the rim. We’re extremely proud of her immediate impact playing at the next level!

Fall 2024 Signing Day

Congratulations to our Div I Softball commit to the University of Delaware, Gabriella Pudimott! Wishing her the best as she continues to compete at the next level. Gabby has gotten picked to be a part of the Carpenter Cup for the past 2 year. In 2022, she was picked for 2nd team All-Conference as a catcher in Flight B. In 2023 she was picked as the 1st team All-Conference catcher for Flight B and in 2024, she was 1st team at large catcher for Flight A. Gabby caught Ducks junior Samantha Stokes when she got her 100th strike out in 2023. When asked about her outlook on the upcoming season, head coach Sarah Adkins said: "This year, we are really excited and expecting for her to continue being the leader on the field. We're going to work together to make sure she gets the recognition she deserves this year from everyone in the conference and state. She deserves to be an All-State athlete and we're going to get her there." Gabby is the first Division 1 signee in Odessa history. We look forward to seeing her perform and excel right down the road in Newark as a Blue Hen next year!
